C&A publicly declares its commitment to responsible sourcing with its first RDS-certified down collection

October 11, 2016

C&A Europe has launched a new down puffer jacket collection, the company’s first such collection that was produced with sustainability in mind and certified to the Responsible Down Standard (RDS). The exciting new collection strengthens C&A’s public commitment to the responsible sourcing of down and feathers. From fall 2016 onwards, all of the down and feathers in C&A’s products will be RDS-certified. The new range will be available in all C&A stores throughout Europe and online.

The Responsible Down Standard (RDS), an independent, voluntary global standard owned by Textile Exchange and certified by third party certification bodies, encourages best practices in welfare and prevents harmful practices such as force-feeding and live-plucking. In addition, it enables traceability from hatchling to the final product. The standard was developed over the past three years with input from animal welfare groups, industry experts, brands, and retailers. The RDS has been developed according to all applicable quality principles (ISEAL best practices). As such, it is applied to all down supply chains and provides the strongest chain of custody assurance.

Jeffrey Hogue, Chief Sustainability Officer C&A Global, explains: “The RDS is a standard that we hope will influence best practices, improve traceability throughout the textile industry, enable more well-informed consumer choices and ultimately improve animal welfare in C&A’s supply chain.”

Animal welfare: a top priority for C&A

C&A strives to ensure the wellbeing of animals involved in creating its products with the highest integrity. Since 2013, C&A has advocated animal welfare by banning live plucking of feathers for production of its products. The company only uses down and feathers which are byproducts of the food industry and have been selected with care to ensure they come from suppliers who adhere to strict animal welfare standards. RDS has gained momentum following its launch in 2014. C&A has made the decision to use down and feathers from supply chains where RDS-verified animal welfare standards are applied.
